NOVEMBER IS NATIONAL RADON GAS ACTION MONTH
Did you know that radon is a naturally-occurring, radioactive gas that comes from the ground (soil) and is found in all homes? It has no colour, smell or odour.
It does not pose a significant health risk at low levels. However, radon gas can build up over time, and prolonged exposure to elevated levels can cause lung cancer. Radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer, surpassed only by smoking. I, for one, was unaware. How about you?
The Government of Canada is raising awareness of this health risk as part of its National Radon Action Month and on their website, they indicate that “exposure to radon is, in fact, the leading cause of cancer in non-smokers. Sadly, exposure to (sic) this gas kills more than 3,200 Canadians each year.”
Fortunately, radon can be detected and we should all take action to determine what levels are in our homes.
Why November? Health Canada suggests measuring radon for a minimum of a three-month period and preferably during the heating season. Which makes November the perfect time.
Here are some useful Government references that can assist in having your home tested for radon.
